Trace the source of the 1854 Cholera Epidemic

Many readers will be aware of this one, but for anyone who is not, the Broad Street Pump is famous as the source of the 1854 outbreak of cholera in Soho, but this was only ever discovered thanks to the work of one man, Dr John Snow.

Residents were stumped as to what was causing the illness and it was only when Dr Snow mapped the addresses of the sick that he noticed that most of those who had been struck by the disease had a unifying characteristic – their nearest accessible water source was the pump located at the junction of Broad Street, now Broadwick Street, and Cambridge Street, now Lexington Street, close to the rear wall of what is now a Sam Smiths pub called the John Snow.

Snow subsequently managed to persuade those responsible to take the handle off the pump, and this prevented infected water from being used. Later on, it was discovered that the spring below had been contaminated with sewage. A replica pump has since been installed nearby (see above) to commemorate this. He also managed to use statistics to show the connection between the quality of the source of water and cholera cases, demonstrating that the Southwark and Vauxhall Waterworks Company was using water from a sewage-polluted section of the Thames and delivering it to homes with an increased incidence of cholera.

    Can you trace religion back to the source like an infectious disease can be traced back to the source?
    Here’s a quick history lesson for you kids, John Snow; Google it douche-bags. He traced a cholera epidemic back to its source in 1854, back when people still thought cholera was spread by vapors and airborne nasties. He simply interviewed people sick with cholera and found that they had all consumed water from the same water fountain and this simple yet groundbreaking detective technique was the beginning of epidemiology. My question is, can you use this simple detective technique to trace a religion epidemic back to its source?

    Yes: people. Infections can actually usually be exhibited in the same source.

    All things have a source. Many things can be traced back to their source. Doesn’t make them bad.

    You cannot trace religion back to when it started but the babble christians use claims there was a time when men did not call on the name of the Lord. If there was a time when men began to call upon the name of Lord, then there was a time when religion was unheard of!

    Yes, religion started when humans started worshiping the Sun as their god.

    Sun/light = God.

    Darkness = Satan.

    They worshiped the Sun for giving them protection from the darkness! Hmmm…. it all sounds so familiar!

    Humans worshiped the sun looong before any religion ever existed.

    No, religion existed long before history. And even if we found where and when it started, what could be done about it? There are no time machines that I’m aware of.

    Christianity is the ‘good bacterial flora’ necessary for good health.

    The religion of the Creator God is the oldest religion.

    It started in the Garden of Eden, evolved to Judaism via Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Israel) through the tribe of Judah, then after Jesus’ life, death and resurrection became known as Christianity.

    Any other religions (the infectious diseases) either broke off and/or started since.
